Setting Up A Small Area for Cukes

New Planting Experiment

So after going through "Promotion Day," I realized that my plants have been touching the ground.  Unfortunately, this may invite all sorts of bugs and disease not to mention what might happen if the gardener gets too close with his trimmer!

Getting Ready for the New Gardening Season

Repairing My Rain Barrel

So I have this rain barrel by Fiskars that had been good for me and for my garden.  But recently after I left it out during a freeze, it developed a minute crack somewhere and wasn't filling up anymore.  After reading more about it on Amazon (since I was thinking of just purchasing a new one) I found that most of the complaints about this barrel was due to the same issue.  The shoddy spigot was the second-most hated thing about this barrel.

And because I pride myself on spending little to nothing on my hobby, I felt that paying nearly $100 for something that might cause me more problems was out of the question.

Oh No! Hard Freeze!

hard freeze

Oh No! A hard freeze has hit and I didn't protect my plants!

Well, join the club. As you can see from the above picture, I tried to cover the plants with plastic only to find out the next morning that it was sorely insufficient.  Since I water "from the bottom" the pots were all stuck in ice blocks.
